A visit to
P.W. Akkerman in the Arcade is a real treat for all who love the classic smell of paper and ink, and the traditions of writing. With a distinguished air, they smile from within their glistening cabinets: fountain pens, roller balls and propelling pencils by exclusive brands such as Montblanc, ST Dupont, Parker and Waterman.
is timeless, and a must-see for every collector. Prices vary from a few euros (for a lark) to over €15,000 for the very exclusive items. And don’t forget to ask to see the splendid, hand-painted Phoenix collection.
you could always buy a soft case, a tin pen stand, Moleskine notebook, collector’s box or an elegant folder of paper to match the beauty of your new writing implement. To complete a beautiful gift, other accessories are also available: cuff links and billfolds, and wooden blotters (to dry the ink without leaving unsightly stains).
What can we say?
It’s all in the family, and has been for three generations. The current Mr Akkerman has a book on the subject behind the counter. The store is a real treasure, of the kind steadily becoming more of a rarity in the Netherlands. But not in the Arcade.
